Physical Abuse and Neglect
« Back to Elder Abuse Targeting Men
Older men may experience physical abuse in the form of hitting, slapping, pushing, or improper restraint. Neglect occurs when caregivers fail to provide basic needs such as food, hygiene, medication, or medical care. Physical abuse can leave visible injuries, but neglect may have subtler signs like weight loss, bedsores, or untreated medical conditions. Men may be reluctant to report abuse due to pride, fear of retaliation, or social stigma. Chronic neglect and repeated physical harm can result in long-term health complications, including fractures, infections, and functional decline.
Additional signs of abuse include frequent hospital visits with unexplained injuries, inconsistent explanations for injuries, and withdrawal from social interactions. Prevention relies on caregiver education, social support for elders, and routine monitoring of vulnerable men living alone or in care facilities.
