Judith Kleinfeld

Judith Kleinfeld is an American psychologist and educator known for her research on gender issues, education, and social development. She has written extensively on the experiences of boys and young men in education, challenging common assumptions about gender gaps in learning. Kleinfeld has also explored cross-cultural psychology, particularly in Arctic communities. Her work often bridges academic research and public policy, aiming to improve educational practices and social understanding.

  • [1967 and 1970] : M.A. and Ph.D. in Human Development from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Career and Achievements

In the early 2000s, Kleinfeld turned her attention to gender differences in education, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by boys in the classroom. She became a prominent voice in the debate over gender equity in education, challenging the widely held belief that girls were being systematically shortchanged in schools. In her widely discussed work, The Myth That Schools Shortchange Girls, she argued that boys, in fact, were often at a greater disadvantage in terms of academic performance and engagement. Her research played a key role in shaping public discourse and education policy surrounding the so-called “boy crisis.”

Throughout her career, Kleinfeld has published numerous books and articles addressing psychology, education, and gender. Her work has reached a broad audience, having been featured in national media outlets such as The New York Times and The Atlantic, and she has testified before the U.S. Congress on education-related issues. Though specific awards may not be widely documented, Kleinfeld’s contributions have earned her national recognition as a thought leader in both academic and policy-making communities. Her career reflects a deep commitment to understanding how social and cultural contexts influence education and to advocating for reforms that support all learners.
