Jack Kammer
Jack Kammer is a writer, advocate, and social worker known for his work on gender issues, especially around the experiences of boys and men. In his early life, Kammer grew up in the United States during a time when discussions around gender were becoming more prominent, particularly in the wake of second-wave feminism. He has shared that he became interested in gender equality from a young age but noticed that the conversation often left out the perspectives and challenges faced by males.
Education
- [Early-2000s] : B.A from Marquette University in Wisconsin. Though the specific area of study is not known, based on his later work, it is assumed to have focused on sociology, communications and gender studies.
- [2008] : MSW and MBA from the University of Maryland.
Career and Achievements
In 1983, Kammer hosted a radio talk show called “In a Man's Shoes”, where he discussed gender bias in social services and highlighted the need for systemic change.
Two to three years after starting the radio talk show, Kammer worked alongside Elijah Cummings, late and former 7th District Congressman and Black Caucus Chair, in efforts to establish a task for force on men to study the connection between male social issues and problems of crime, violence, educational underachievement, unpaid child support and other issues. However, this was not supported due to fears that it would upset women.
From 2010 to 2012, he worked as a Correctional Officer at the Baltimore City Detention Center and a Parole & Probation agent in central Baltimore. In 2012, he was named “Outstanding Recent Graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work”. He'd given presentations on the Social Work profession’s gender bias at the National Association of Social Workers state conferences in New Mexico (2010), North Carolina (2011) and Maryland (2015).
Before beginning Working Well with Men, in 2013, he worked for the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) as a trainer for state corrections systems to teach prison staff how to run NFI’s “InsideOut Dad” program for incarcerated fathers, but for programs in communities as well.
