« Back to Elder Abuse Targeting Men
Emotional abuse involves verbal assaults, threats, intimidation, humiliation, or social isolation. Older men may experience repeated belittling, manipulation, or being excluded from decision-making regarding their own lives. Long-term emotional abuse can contribute to depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, social withdrawal, and even suicidal ideation.
Men may not recognize emotional abuse as harmful, or they may be reluctant to report it due to shame, embarrassment, or the fear of losing independence. It can occur alongside physical or financial abuse, intensifying the overall impact. Supportive interventions, counseling, and peer social programs can mitigate the negative effects and help restore confidence and autonomy.
