Father-Child Bonding

Barriers to Father-Child Bonding

Multiple structural and personal barriers can limit consistent father involvement. Economic stress, demanding work schedules, family separation, incarceration, and unresolved trauma may reduce opportunities for bonding. These challenges often disproportionately affect low-income families.

Research suggests that supportive policies, community programs, and parenting education can increase paternal engagement. When barriers are addressed through family-centered services and workplace flexibility, father involvement improves significantly, benefiting both children and fathers.
